Staycation the new vacation!
Staycation: a holiday spent in one’s home country rather than abroad, or one spent at home and involving day trips to local attractions.
In the spirit of the “staycation”, I was invited by Best Western® Hotels & Resorts to discover and enjoy some of their hotels located in different locations right here in France! My first staycation experience and I couldn’t have been more excited to see what it was like to take a vacation without getting on a plane or lining up at the airport for hours.
The best reasons to take a staycation?
After a run of long-haul flights over the past few years, I must admit I will not miss being cooped up on a plane for hours. Instead, I will jump on the train and arrive at a beautiful hotel with plenty of time and energy to start exploring straight away!
Reduce time travel
When flying somewhere, not only do you have to take into account the actual flight time but you also have to factor in the hours it takes to get to the airport and then there ’s all the waiting around once you actually get there. Depending on where you live, it is likely that you only have to travel a couple of hours to reach the beautiful location of your staycation. Staycation travel only involves a tank of petrol if you can drive and have access to a car of course, or a train or bus ticket, which is way cheaper than flying.
Being a tourist in your own country
What about a staycation in your own city? Spending the night in a hotel in your very own city can actually be a really great experience. Even though I have lived in Paris for 4 years there are so many museums, churches, restaurants or bars that I have never visited and certainly streets that I have never even walked down.
It can be a quick trip to recharge
If you only have time to get away for a couple of nights or even one night a staycation makes this easily possible. Slipping a night away into your diary is often a lot easier than planning and organising longer trips. Best of all they can often be taken at the last minute when you just need a break. Living in Paris I am really starting to see the value in the new staycation movement!
Home is never far away
If you do have commitments at home or maybe even need to get back quickly home if never far away. Even if you are reliant on buses or trains, it is more than likely that you will be able to take grab one in a reasonably short time as opposed to booking a flight.
No jet lag
If you’re an active person and anything like me you’ll want to arrive at your destination feeling good and ready to start an adventure!
Are you ready to plan your own staycation in France? Here are my top 3 locations!

Nestled on the beach, this Saint-Nazaire hotel is within 10 km of Hippodrome de Pornichet-La Baule, La Baule Beach, and Tiers Paysage Garden is ideally located. Daniel Jouvance Thalassotherapie Centre and Casino de Pornichet. Each room is uniquely decorated with a nautical theme and you’ll feel instantly relaxed as soon as you walk out onto your hotel rooms terrace and look out over the ocean. The rooms are all equipped with modern facilities and of free Wi-Fi access and a business lounge. The restaurant offers fresh, simple, modern cuisine.
Beyond enjoying the restaurant La Plage M.Hulot that offers two terraces-with one on the beach along with delicious fresh produce that mixes tradition and modern cuisine you can also enjoy renting a Bicycle to explore the town, have a round of golf, enjoy hiking or wind sailing or even spend time wandering the stylish and charming avenue De Gaulle, in La Baule. You will have an idea of the holiday atmosphere recreated in the famous Jacques Tati film -Les vacances de Monsieur Hulot-, that was shot here in the Hotel de la Plage in the late 60s, with M. Hulot as the main character. Definitely, a location to relax and unwind by the sea and return to the city feeling energised.
In the city – Best Western Plus Hotel La Demeure, Paris
Set in a typical Haussmanian building within a stone’s throw of the lively Rue Mouffetard, a brilliant location located in 13th Arrondissement, this stylish 4 star hotel is within a 10-minute walk of Jardin des Plantes and Grande Galerie de l’Evolution. Paris Catacombs and Pantheon are also within 2km. After a recent restoration, the hotel is undeniably chic and feels more like a boutique hotel than what you would traditionally imagine of the international group of hotels. The rooms are absolutely gorgeous with all the trimmings. Luxurious toiletries and beautiful linens the decoration of the hotel is of the highest quality and will make you feel right at home during your stay.
Built in 1903, La Demeure offers soundproofed rooms, a perfect touch for a Parisienne hotel and a fitness room if you wanted to fit in a quick workout before you venture out into the city. The beautiful buffet breakfast that is served every morning was a personal highlight for me along with the stylish decor and modern touches. Sit down after your breakfast and jump on the computer provided to create your itinerary for the day and do some quick research for the best bars and restaurants in the area! If you’re looking for a change in atmosphere and want to experience parisianne living at it’s best this is the place for you!
In the countryside – Best Western Premier Hotel de la Paix, Reims
A new high-speed railway brings the champagne city of Reims well within weekend-break distance making it the perfect location for a staycation. In the heart of Reims, within just a 10-minute stroll of Museum of Fine Arts and Notre-Dame de Reims and situated right at the heart of the city, close to where the action is and only walking distance from the tourist attractions, such as the magnificent Gothic Cathedral built in 1211. Features stained glass windows, a 12-petaled rose window, a Gothic organ case, and an astronomical clock built in the 15th century it’s definitely worth a visit!
Part of the city’s charm is the number of seductive chocolate shops, glorious medieval architecture and the local food markets making it the perfect destination for a romantic getaway or gastronomic high flyer. After walking the cobblestoned streets head back to the 4-star hotel and enjoy all of the luxuries such as room service.
If you’re happy to relax and enjoy the hotel take a plunge in the indoor swimming pool before heading back to the room to dress up and head out to the hotel’s bar. Modern with a great atmosphere, order a cocktail and sit outside and enjoy the private terrace. After that, you will definitely be ready to dine at the Restaurant Cafe la Paix, where you will enjoy beautiful French cuisine and if you’re lucky even get to select your own seafood!
If you’re a lover of champagne the hotel is only 1.6 km from Mumm and 2.5 km from Veuve Clicquot-Ponsardin. I would highly recommend booking a tour. The service is definitely 4 star and the staff will go out of there way to assist you any way they can, helping me on more than one occasion.
